HomeSave, the foreclosure
prevention campaign of the Capital Region, will present the film "American
Casino" on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at WAMC’s The Linda, 339
Central Avenue in Albany. This well-reviewed documentary explains the subprime
mortgage crisis that triggered the recession. It puts a human face on a critical
economic story. David Denby of the New Yorker called the film, “Fascinating! A
terrific documentary chronicling the subprime-mortgage mess and the financial
collapse of the past two years . . . The movie is a lucid and comprehensive
picture of a rotten system.”
The film is being shown as part of WAMC’s ongoing “Food for Thought Series: an
Evening of Socially Relevant Cinema.” The doors will open at 6 pm with a
reception hosted by Honest Weight Food Coop. The film shows at 7 pm and will be
followed by a panel discussion with local and national experts on foreclosure.
An authority who is featured in the film, Lisa Evans of
St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center
in Baltimore, will also participate in the event. Ms. Evans has been
involved in housing for over 30 years. St. Ambrose Housing is the oldest housing
non-profit in Baltimore. Her work includes managing St. Ambrose’s successful
foreclosure prevention program. Lisa Evans is available for interviews prior to
the event.
